I am always amazed by the complexities of the mind! One of the weirdest examples of this is what happens when an insomniac TRIES to keep themselves awake while laying in bed.
Thy this: Lay in bed with no TV or radio to occupy your mind. Make sure the room is dark and quiet. Make sure you did some stretching exercises and have made a conscious effort to relax before going to bed (and no tea, coffee, soda or cocoa for at least 3 hours before bedtime).
Now, as you lay in bed, try to "think yourself awake." Mentally say to yourself, "I'm going to stay awake; I'm not going to allow myself to think about anything else but staying awake. I will stay awake." Make an effort to keep your eyes open without straining; don't allow yourself to relax even that tiny bit by relaxing your eyes (but blink naturally).
Oddly enough, this is just what will make some people with insomnia fall asleep: TRYING to stay awake!
