what is this? Please help! ears ringing

I have this thing that happens 3-4 times a year and when it happens it is quite frightening. just when I am drfting off to sleep I find myself half asleep with the loudest, high pitched ring/electrical sound in my ears. It is as if my brain is making this noise. when it happens I feel like I may be dieing that is how scary it is. I will wake up and drift off to sleep and it will happen a few more times(1-3) before I am able to fall asleep. Does this happen to anyone or does anyone know what it is?
