I have allergy probs and experience a similar sort of ringing in my ear when I'm especially stuffed up. This could be worse on the side you are lying on...
Tinnitus (ringing in ears) can also come from aspirin and several other things.
If periodic and short-lived, it is not likly to be anything serious.
