Daytime 'hangover' is a known side effect, but unlike Elavil, it does not seem to commonly cause dry mouth and possible cardiac arythmia (according to what I read)

Trazadone suppresses REM sleep. Which is okay, if you're using it to suppress nightmares/PTSD, but not good at all for your sleep patterns in general. You need that time in REM-phase sleep for mental sharpness.

Consider why you're taking it - it's frequently used to counter the insomnia probs caused by anti-depressants. If that's the case, maybe you could try a different AD? I was on a low dose of Paxil for ages. Took it in the morning and never noticed sleep problems. Of course, I was big-time sleep-deprived from apnea, so maybe I'm not a good example ;-)

Was your initial problem an inability to sleep? Or poor quality sleep and daytime sleepiness? You may want to see if you fit the symptoms of a sleep disorder, and get a sleep study. Many doctors are not aware of the vague and varied symptoms of poor quality sleep caused by sleep disorders such as apnea and RLS. They would only know to treat daytime sleepiness with uppers and downers. Much of the research in sleep medicine has been done too recently to have percolated through the general medical population.

I admit, I'm always suspicious when a new drug is recommended. It's not the doctors I don't trust so much as the drug companies, and their outrageous budgets devoted to sales and marketing. They'll take old and cheap but useful drugs off the market so they can sell the new expensive ones. Pfft!

good luck on your quest for ZZZZ's
