Regular noises prevent me from sleeping

Posted by Sally on January 02, 2002 at 12:55:42:

I have what I consider to be a very wierd problem with getting to sleep.
I tend to be a very heavy sleeper and when I fall asleep and I don't usually wake up until the next morning. I have been known to be able to sleep through the loudest of storms and things like road drills right outside my bedroom window.
The problem I have is actually getting to sleep. I have no problem getting to sleep with some loud noises, for example, a TV set to a high volume. But if the noise has a regular pattern, whatever its volume, there is no way I can get to sleep whilst I can still hear it.
Irregular loud noises are fine (or constant noises like a fridge), but if there's even someone breathing regularly or a dripping tap, a ticking clock etc. and I can hear them then I've got no chance and it starts to drive me mad while I'm lying there and no closer to dropping off.
This has caused problems with my boyfriend because when I stay with him we have to either play some music in the background or I try to listen to the hum of his computer hoping it will drown out his heavy breathing.
I don't understand how I can help my problem, can anyone suggest anything or share similar experiences?
I think it might be a psycholigical problem, in which case I thought perhaps hypnosis might work. Otherwise, earplugs, but then my alarm won't be able to wake me when I need to get up. By the way, I'm 20 and a student, if thats relevant. Please help.
