It sounds like sleep apnea. There is a whole forum devoted to it on this site- they also have information about it if you click on the "sleep disorders" link at the top of the page.
Yes, not being able to catch your breath during sleep can be very dangerous. It may be apnea, it may be another sleep disorder, or it may be something entirely different, but if you're awaking that violently, I would call your doctor a.s.a.p. and discuss what has been happening.
