hypersomnia

Posted by jack on January 09, 2002 at 11:24:53:

i have been reading about hypersomnia and it seems to fit my condition, i find it difficult to become alert after getting up for work and rarely feel refreshed after a night's sleep until several hours later. often i automatically turn off the alarm clock in the morning but i can usually wake up if i set it to go off early and hit snooze a few times.i have been thinking about the normalcy of my condition and have been considered just lazy by some and wonder if it is true. today ,and other days when i don't have any responsibilities in the morning i stayed in bed mainly in a dream state until 12:30 pm after going to sleep at about 12:45 am. i usually become alert during these excessive sleep periods and realize that i have been sleeping to long, but because of not having anything to do in the morning and the feeling of restfulness and peacefulness of the sleep i go back to sleep.my wife sleeps a very predictable 7 to 9 hours per night and usually goes to bed at about 11pm. i am not usually tired at this time but can fall asleep after half an hour of reading. sometimes i don't feel tired until 2 or 3 in the morning and have always considered myself a night owl. my excessive sleeping and problems waking up in the morning have caused me to be late for work a few times(blame it on the alarm clock)and my wife makes me feel very guilty about her being up for hours before me. i am nervous about going to a sleep clinic and worry i may just be undisciplined and lazy, anyone have suggestions?
