When you are in REM (dream stage) sleep, your body is sort of "paralyzed" to keep you from acting out your dreams and possibly hurting yourself. Sometimes, people will wake up during this stage and -- as you said -- their mind is awake but their body is not.

The reason why you feel that you are suffocating is because your chest muscles are having trouble moving due to the paralysis. You won't actual suffocate, but it's a horrible feeling.

It is normal to have these every now and then, but you are having them rather frequently it seems. You should see a sleep specialist.
