Some people have seasonal depressive disorder (I believe the abbreviation is SDD) and experience hypersomnia, depression and other sleep problems during the darker shorter days of the winter months. I would suggest searching for this disorder here to read some posts by people who experience this. Also, you may want to mention these problems and bring up this disorder to your son's doctor.
