Loud noise causing screaming?

Posted by HarryOx on July 17, 2002 at 07:02:01:

Hey there,

On a couple of occasions, I've had a very loud noise (i.e., smoke alarm errantly going off) wake me up in the middle of the night. What puzzles me is that when this happens, I wake up screaming and in a complete state of panic for about 5 to 10 seconds before I get my bearings. I imagine it's natural for someone to be scared when they're woken up like that, but my response seems more like I'm suffering a night terror. Anybody hear of anything like this or know what might cause that kind of a reaction?
