My dreams keep me awake-Awake but still dreaming?

Posted by Jamous on July 29, 2002 at 15:47:32:

Hey everyone!
I have no idea if this is a sleep disorder or something else. Maybe I'm just crazy? This has been going on for years. Here's what happens: Sometime after falling asleep I will awake to find people in my room. As far as I can tell I am awake because I can see everything in my room perfectly. I will hear these people talking, see them moving, etc... Sometimes it will be one person or up to 10. In some instances these people will be someone I do or do not know. I know (or at least think) my eyes are open when I see these people. I cannot sleep when these hallucinations happen because I can hear these people talking and moving, and feel as if I have to "entertain" them until they leave. I know that these people are not real, I can tell myself over and over again that I am just hallucinating. I'll even go so far as to tell the "people" out loud that I need to go to sleep and that they should leave. This seems so crazy to me. I also feel as if I'm awake when these hallucinations happen because I can turn on the light (which makes them dissapear) and then turn it back off (they re-appear shortly after). Although these hallucinations stress me out, I don't feel as if they are night terrors. I don't awake fightened or with tachycardia. I can repeatedly open and close my eyesand these hallucinations won't go away. These dreams or hallucinations go on for up to 2 hrs. I usually have to sleep in another room to avoid these hallucinations. I also don't think that it is lucid dreaming, because I am not at all in control. This is really frusterating because I lose sleep over it. Do you think this is a sleep disorder and/or has something to do with anxiety and depression. I really need some help or ANY ideas you have on what this could be. Also, these hallucinations can occur up to 2 different times a night. I have trouble getting to sleep and often wake every 1/2 hr.-1 hr. I am alos a very light sleeper. I have only found two people that share the same experiences that I do. I don't think they have figured out what their problem is either. Please help!
Mucho Thanks, J-me
