sleep starts and severe depression

Posted by PeaceKitty on August 08, 2002 at 22:04:16:

I'm 21 years old, and (to make a long story short) have multiple, serious autoimmue disorders. For the last 2 months, I've been experiencing several auditory sleep starts per night and severe depression. I'm really getting scared that I may have a serious mental disorder (like schizophrenia or uni-polar disorder). The sleep starts are terrifying, and I usually have irrational fears of death and dying immediately after the sleep start occurs. It takes me a good 15 minutes to calm myself down, but it happens again if I try to go back to sleep. I'm developing a fear of sleeping, and have to completely wear myself out in order to sleep though the night.

Is there a strong connection between mental health problems and sleep starts?
