Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome

Posted by Alex on September 12, 2002 at 01:31:33:

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting here. I perused the archives searching for some postings on DSPS, and noiced many discussions. However I was unable to come across my exact problem.

As some had stated in these posts, I feel most aware, and at ease during the late evening or at night. I have been this way since I was an adolescent, and not much has changed in young adulthood.

I have attmepted throughout this time to alter my sleeping patterns in order to wake up early in the morning. Falling asleep at a certain time hasn't been much of a problem for me, but one thing I have consistently noticed is that no matter how good a night's sleep was for me, I inevitably grew tired and sullen during the day.

It's almost as if the sunlight itself was draining me, and I would eventually desire to take a nap at some point. This feeling would usually arrive at around noon. I also experienced muscle tension, slight anxiety and headaches during early daytime.

I found it very dififcult to make it through an entire day without feeling extremely tired, or falling asleep in the evening and waking up later that night. This of course would eventually ruin my sleep pattern, and I would find it extremely difficult to even attempt to wake up early at all.

I was wondering if anyone has had similiar symptoms where waking up early, no matter how early you went to sleep the night before, left you tired throughout the day?

I used to assume that I was merely indulging my night owl ways, but as I have tried to correct this problem it has seemed as if something more inate was at work. I finally found out about DSPD, and it makes absolute sense to me.

It's very difficult to propose this to anyone and be taken seriously, but I really do believe that this is my case.

I guess what I would really like to know is if going to a sleep specialist will help me defnitively conclude if I have DSPD or not? Is there really an accurate way to measure my problem internally?

I've heard some discussion about body temperature peaking at different times and the issue of circadian rhythms, but I am not well versed in this discussion.

I would appreciate any replies.
