restless sleep

I hope Honest Expert can help me. For the last few months I have been experiencing restless nights. Actually, one year ago a physical therapist, that I was seeing for low back pain due to muscle tension, recommended I place a rolled hand towel under my low back at night. This helped for months. Now it seems to bother me - gets out of place, causes me to turn side to side - then my hips and shoulders can become uncomfortable, and I often wake up with back pain and stiffness. I looked at tempurpedic (no in-home trial), and select comfort-recommended by a relative who has one (expensive and not sure it will help). I am 54, 5'10, 130 pounds and either walk, taekwondo, or some other physical activity 30 to 60 minutes 5 days a week. Could you please make a recommendation? I prefer sleeping on my back, but the roll is no longer helping. When I turn on my side, I've used a pillow between my knees - then it seems to et in my way when I turn again. Your advice would be much appreciated. THANK YOU.
