obsession with breathing at night

Posted by Lazy Suzan on October 02, 2002 at 10:43:53:

First of all, let me say thanks to Tony for answering my e-mail re: pressure on larynx. Last Thursday I quit taking Remeron, Ambien and Xanax and tried sleeping without meds for the first time in a year. I don't know if I had convinced myself that I would have insomnia, but that's exactly what happened...I slept a couple of hours a night and then it seemed like something was happening with my breathing, I started coughing and then throwing up. Last night I decided to go back on Remeron and I probably slept 10 hours. It definitely looks like I was having a major panic attack.

For the past several months, I have been observing my breathing and heartbeat at night and now I'm becoming obsessive about it. I try to relax, but I start thinking that I'm not gonna take another breath. I can inhale fine, but I'm having trouble on the exhale part. Does anyone else out there have this problem? I've already seen a "sleep specialist", but she lost interest when she found that I don't have sleep apnea. I am afraid that this breathing obsession is taking over my life.
