Posted by calebb on November 06, 2002 at 00:11:11:I've been having a sleep problem for the last 4-5 years - mainly it was trouble getting up in the morning. It has been progressively (and slowly) getting worse and now I'm having problems with excessive daytime sleepiness.
I was finally referred to a sleep specialist, and I had a sleep study and a multiple sleep latency test 2 weeks later. (yesterday)
The doctor went over my sleep study with me the next morning and it looked normal. Only one apneic event all night & my legs didn't move. My stage 2 sleep awakenings were ~30 minutes apart (the normal is ~6 or 7 minutes). My rem sleep stages were 90 minutes apart; 20 minutes for the first one, then 30 minutes and the last one was 40 minutes long. (then they woke me up, 6:00AM) They had me stay for an MSLT
During the MSLT I fell asleep within 5 minutes (sometimes as quickly as 2 minutes). I don't think I went into rem sleep, but the technician said I had to wait to talk to the doctor to find out the results for sure. (and the doctor is busy so I have to wait 2 weeks to talk to the Dr. about my MSLT test...grumble)
Anyway, my roommates tell me I talk A LOT at night. I sleep walk a few times a week. I can't keep posters on my wall next to my bed since I tear them down while I sleep. But during the nighttime sleep study I didn't move or talk at all. (I also have hypnagogic hallucinations while going to sleep a couple times a week - I'm pretty good at ignoring them: They usually feel like someone pushing or shaking me or moving my bed or blankets around but I can still fall asleep quickly)
My sleep doctor knows about all these things so I'm sure he will consider them; Since I didn't show any sleep walking or talking during the night study, do you think his diagnosis of the MSLT will be different? I think I probably have either hypersomnia or narcolepsy... But if the sleep talking/walking is from a REM disorder, the doctor will never know.
I'm a chemist, not a doctor so I'm going to trust my doctor, but I thought I'd see if any knowledgable people are reading this; Do you think the sleep walking & talking is unrelated to my EDS? Are there any REM disorders that cause EDS?
(also, I was tired as usual during the MSLT despite having no somnambulance, so I guess that probably answers my own question, but I'm still interested in some educated feedback while I wait for 2 weeks to talk to the doctor)
