My suggestion would be to look into lucid dreaming - there is a lot of information regarding it on the web. With lucid dreaming, you can learn to become aware that you are dreaming and even take a certain amount of control over your dreams. This will prevent you from having to deal with the dreams helplessly.
The biggest roadblock to lucid dreaming has to do with dream recall - if you don't remember your dreams very often, it's hard to practice lucid dreaming techniques. But it doesn't sound like you have that problem. (Generally, you want to remember roughly one dream at night before trying to practice lucid dreaming. There are techniques to increase your dream recall, too).
A technique I used for a while which is very simple but moderately successfully was simply to say to myself over and over again that I would become lucid during my dreams as I fell asleep. It is very tedious, and will probably make a little harder to fall asleep, but I did tend to become lucid far more often doing this than simply falling asleep normally.
