Nightmares sleeping on my back

I have had nightmares while sleeping on my back. I am 33 and this has been a trouble of mine for as long as I can remember. I usually sleep on my side and don't have nightmares but occassionally I may find myself sleeping on my back and sure enough I wake up in the middle of the night with a deeply disturbing nightmare. These are nightmares that jar my sense of reality for a few minutes after I am awake. I don't have any breathing problems that I am aware of and I am fairly healthy. Could you please advise me as to what may be causing this and how I can get help for it?
