sleep paralysis..coping

Posted by Sam on December 19, 2002 at 09:50:58:

I hope this will be of help to sufferers of sleep paralysis, I have suffered for many years, I can go months with it not happening at all and then months of having it nearly every night, the reason I am posting this is because although it is terrifying and unpredictable it is possible to control it, not prevent it, but I have taught myself not to fight it, when I was a child I would struggle for what seemed like hours and scream on the inside, (well anyone reading this is doing so for a reason and does not need me to go into details) but now I simply let it happen, it is not easy to do and you still feel helpless and want to fight it but when you relax and let it happen I promise you the ordeal is not so bad, it does not kill you even if at the time it feels like it might, and you usually wake up fully or sometimes drift back to sleep (although not often the latter I must admit).

It is also a comfort when you understand you are not the only person suffering (i have met several other sufferers all alive, well and healthy) and that it is not super natural but a perfectly natural and common occurance.

One theory I do have that is slightly disturbing is that I am convinced that when you hear "they died in their sleep" this could often be the cause, so relaxing and going with it is deffinately sound advise ( I promise it does not hurt if you relax)
