Well, your post pretty accurately describes myself.

I didn't think I could really have narcolepsy since I never fall over like narcoleptics do in the movies.... It took ~5 years and 4 doctors before I found a doctor that would refer me to a sleep lab.

I went to the sleep lab, and they found I could fall asleep within 4 minutes just about anytime during the day. (I used to sleep all weekend long if I was given the chance and I'd still be sleepy on Monday morning!).

I didn't have any SOREMs in my sleep lab (rem sleep during a short nap, sudden onset of rapid eye movement), so they diagnosed me with idiopathic hypersomnolence. I do have sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations, and very mild cataplexy (usually just my hands or voice), so I could have low hypocretin (aka narcolepsy).

Bottom line is, you need to get a referal to a sleep lab so you can get a good diagnosis and explore treatment options. I started having symptoms at ~18 & was diagnosed & started taking a stimulant at 23 (adderall). My life is so drastically different not being sleepy all the time! I'm 5 times more efficient at work since I'm not constantly dozing and I can enjoy hanging out with friends again since I'm not sleeping all afternoon & evening.

Get to a doctor :-)

Caleb
