my sleep disorder, any ideas?

Posted by juxta on January 22, 2003 at 15:44:27:

after browsing more than half the posts on this forum i haven't really found many cases similar to my sleep disorder. i have several symptoms one of which is hard for me to classify but i think it could be contibuted to sleepwalking. i'm 23, male, smoker with hyperthyroidism.

i've noticed times when i wake up naked but i go to sleep clothed. in the morning find my clothes are usually scattered on and around my bed. i'm a very 'active' sleeper, i don't hold one position for long. i usually find myself in wierd positions with my blankets and pillow on the floor. i've been told i toss and turn a lot, snoring louding, drooling and moaning which didnt bother me much save for the drooling. i also talk in my sleep, but i mostly mumble making it hard to tell what i'm saying. i've experienced sleep walking from time to time. they seem to be isolated occurrences that don't happen on a regular basis, they're usually a couple months appart.

also i notice i hardly dream at all. a friend says that you always dream, you just don't remember them. but when i do dream, i always remember it happening just not any details and i can't recall the last time i had a dream that much less one that i can remember vividly.

recently things have been getting more progressive. I will try and describe this problem as best I can. I have been told that first i begin to snore loudly and gasp shortly and "we" sounds in my throat. Then I begin to roll about and kick and make my body sort of like a
contortionis, also i begin to scratch and rub myself(in a non-sexual way), and take off my clothes......These things happen in no set occurance excpet perhaps for the constant snoring and "wet sounds", i have a medical condition (hyperthyroidism) that inhibits my air pipe to breath reguarly. Simply put i roll about and de-clothe myself and as well i have been to known to sleep walk and pee on things. when others try to wake me up i sort of 'snap' into a semi-conscious state, peer around the room then go back to sleep. i don't remember any of this, i've never awaken while this is happening. also i'm very hard to wake up durring this, i've been nudged prodded and yelled at but i don't fully wake up. i don't remember anything at all, the only evidence is the clothes that i leave on the floor. i noticed that i do this more when i sleep on a bed than to floor, which i think i'm going to do but i don't like the prospect of giving up the comfort a bed provides.

that's as best as i can describe it with quoting both of my roommates. this seems like it would be 'night terrors' except that i don't recall anything that happened and i don't dream either. i very rarely dream. i know i need to see a specialist, maybe even a psychatrist. i'm not particulary fond of taking medication, but when push comes to shove... the only precaution i take before i go to sleep is wear a belt if possible and tighten any drawstrings, but that doesn't prevent it, my sleepwalking self just has a hard time removing his pants.

has anyone have or had any experiences like this? if so, besides seeking medical help what did you do to help this disorder? how much does it cost to take a professional sleep test? are there any sites or good books that have reported/studied cases like these and what is this condition specifically called?

sorry if it was such a long post, i actually had to cut i down a few paragraphs. thanks in advance for any replies.
