Posted by Scott K on July 20, 2000 at 18:56:28:While researching my quite minor Fibromyalgia I found several statements from physicians that quite often Fibro sufferers also suffer from RLS/PLMS. There are also similar statements that CFS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is similarly common among Fibro sufferers. I am quite interested in these unproven but suspected links as I also have worried about having the beginnings of CFS myself, but this always was chalked off to my PLMS. Yet, there are some symptoms of CFS that are not shared by PLMS, and I have these mildly. I will also note that dietary solutions suggested for each are the same, low carbohydrate diets, elimination of caffeine, the list goes on. PLMS is bad enough, but I can reasonably combat it. CFS is downright scary though as there is so little that seems to be able to be done for it and I fear I have the a good bit more than the beginnings of it.
As far as causes....
Essentially always had the Fibro. RLS/PLMS is known to be hereditary and my family members/history bear this out. I had some rest problems, but was totally functional, just tired. Divorce came and I sought and received and anti-depressant, Paxil, low dosage, was on it 1.5 to 2 yrs. During this time the problems with lack of rest and CFS symptoms got worse and steamrolled me. Thought it was further depression, Paxil was increased a bit. Problem continued. Useless doctors. Unusual high stress at work was also present due to special project. Ex wife, (3 yrs ex at this point), also took unusual and effective measures to increase stress. Blood pressure spikes, blood pressure med - HCTZ, inability to wake in morning despite 5 alarms and answering service doing wake up calls. Doctor's still useless. Finally one at urgent care ordered me off the Paxil immediatly. Things levelled out, depression was NOT present, but RLS/PLMS, suspected CFS, and Fibro all much worse. Finally was sent for sleep study and they discovered the RLS/PLMS, unknown to me till then.
Biggest single thing that helped? Loosing my job over it.
If you read my other posts you'll find I'm waging war against this, finding some reasonable success, and talking about it. There are still nights that it gets bad, but I have quite adequate control and these nights are now limited to one at a time rather than 3 to 5 in a row as once was. A single night I can tolerate.
