Just what works for me

Posted by TMartin on August 08, 2000 at 17:11:10:

My wife just told me about this web site and that I was not the only one who had problems with overly twitchy legs. For probably going on ten years now (I am 32 years old) I have been having problems with RLS. It seems to have been getting worse every year or I have been growing more irritated with it as time progresses. After experimenting with myself, I found that the RLS was directly related to the amount of calories/energy in my system. When I eat big meals or just meals with a lot of fat content, within one half to one and one half hours later my body temperature will rise and RLS will become so overwhelming that it drives me nuts. It has reached the point that I will not eat pizza or ice cream in the evenings no matter what knowing that the RLS, which I will without a doubt experience soon afterward, will be so extreme. These days I have found that if I simply get plenty of exercise (I use a gym), don't eat to the point of being full during meals, eat smaller meals, avoid foods with a lot of fat, and do not eat a lot of food of whatever kind late in the evenings, I will not experience RLS. Occasionally I forget and gorge on a saturday night dinner and suffer the consequences enough to remind me that I still have RLS. The best I can figure about this RLS is that my body uses up excess energy (excess carbohydrates or fats in the blood stream after digesting a meal which exceeds the body's current energy needs) by elevating my body temperature (burning up excess energy) and by causing my legs (and most of the rest of the muscles in my body at times) to physically work of the energy by twitching, flexing, etc. Sort of a self induced workout.

Just my two cents. God bless you all in your persuit for relief.
