Posted by Ruth on June 18, 2000 at 22:02:03:Hi,
I've been working 12 hr night shifts (7 nights out of every 14) for the past several years. I happen to like it. Get every other weekend off, etc.
But nobody else likes it, and now it looks like we're going to an "Alternative" schedule (which most people seem to want). But I don't! Its going to be Murder for the 'D' shift (which is what I'm on). Now instead of working 12 hr nights 7 out of every 14 with every other weekend off, I will be working *every* Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun on the following schedule:
Week #1 Thu & Fri 8 hrs, 2p - 10p
Sat & Sun 12 hrs, 6a - 6pWeek #2 Thu & Fri 8 hrs 10p - 6a
Sat & Sun 12 hrs 6p - 6aWeek #3 Thu & Fri 8 hrs 6a - 2p
Sat & Sun 12 hrs 6p - 6aWeek #4 = Week #1
Well, #%@&!! That looks like a Swing shift to me - which is NOT what I signed up for, and NOT what I want to work. It took me a LONG time to train myself to sleep days & be wide awake nights, and I'm seriously worried that I won't be able to make my body do this! Maybe 25 yrs ago I could have, but...
Any tips from Swing shift workers on how to teach an older "bod" (well, 47) new tricks, sleep-wise that is?
Thx,
Ruth
