I doubt that there could have been much support for going over to rotating shifts unless management pushed it. It's a good way to get rid of older workers.

The new shift schedule you describe is a really ugly one. Why doesn't the management just throw the older workers into a meat grinder and be done. That new schedule is also not good for younger workers or any worker that is trying to keep some kind of healthy life style but it's especially bad for older workers and anyone interested in having a family life. Got a union?
