I'm sorry to say that I haven't much to say. Rotating shifts are not condusive to exercise programs. I know only one guy still involved in a disciplined exercise program. He's still fairly young and still single.

Usually rotating shift's effect on the gut and the brain doesn't leave one in the mood for a invigorating session of handball or tennis and partners are scarce. As steve j below suggests, your best bet is the kind of exercise that's built into the job or getting to and from the job e.g. bicyling or jogging.

The weight gain you and most rotating shift workers experience is not merely a phenomenum of lack of exercise but also symptomatic of premature aging. Shiftwork equals sleep deprivation equals the symptoms of premature aging insulin resistance. Read the studies of Dr. Eve Van Cauter.
