Well, faster than a speeding bullet, our union negotiated something Else & the vote was in favor (by a teeny margin), so at least that horrible schedule is Toast for now.

I'm not sure what we got was better, but oh well...

Now they're going to 3, 8-hr shifts, 5 days/wk, but then the little kicker is the weekends: 2, 3-day, 12 hr weekend-only shifts (Sat-Mon, days & Fri-Sun, nights, yes there will be some overlap with the regular 5-day/wk people on Fridays and Mondays). BUT. *NO* production on the weekend shifts, NONE. It will be "strictly maintenance" only. In otherwords, they're turning 2/5 of us into janitors. (Whatever happened to all the management malarkey about taking pride in our work? Doesn't feel like anything to be very proud of if you can be turned into a floor sweeper in a moment's notice.)

Everybody has to put in shift prefs by tomorrow, and prefs will be granted strictly by seniority.

I guess the 2 weekend shifts will get a bonus of sorts: they only will be working 36 hrs but will receive another 4 hrs' pay as a "bonus" every weekend that they have perfect attendance (ie, not absent, not late, don't go home early). Maybe I'm wierd, but why does that feel like an Insult? It feels like everyone is being treated like child with a truancy problem.

I suppose there's something to be said for having a F/T job that occurs entirely between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday. Shoot, the young, broke, and adventurous could even fit in another whole F/T job working weekdays (and believe me, there will be some who will try).

OTOH, most Family Life occurs on weekends -- and those who take, or get stuck on, those perpetual weekend shifts Won't Have Any.

And besides, right at a time when gas prices are rising thru the roof (I live in the part of the country where Unleaded Regular is going for $2+ right now), it means instead of going in to work 7x out of every 14 days, the "lucky ones" of us with enough seniority to remain in production will now be going in to work 10x every 14 days -- almost a 50% increase in mileage on the car, travel time, GAS, etc.

Morale is definitely at a low... and lots of people are "Looking..." You can't help but wonder if that is what they wanted. And most of us who've been there any length of time couldn't possibly start in at a new job and come anywhere close to the wages & pension benefits we'be giving up.

Blah.

I'll tell ya, all this BS is interfering with my SLEEP a lot more than shiftwork ever did.
