I also work a 12-hour shift and if you have five people to do the rotation, I have the absolute best schedule in the entire world for 24-hour coverage 24/7/365. It's a 35-day cycle as follows: (rdo = regular day off) 7 = 0700-1900; 19 = 1900 (prior night) to 0700 on the day shown on the schedule. Ready? S rdo; M 7; T 7; W & Th rdo; Fri-Sun 7; M&Tu rdo; W&Th 7. Sat-Mon rdo; Tues & Wed (really Monday night and Tuesday night) 19; next two rdo; next 3 19; next two rdo; next two 19 (this finishes on Friday morning. The following Monday and Tuesday are "vacation" days or extra tours, depending on how many hours are needed to fulfill a full year. It's easier to picture if you plot out a week Sun-Sat on a piece of paper and start the schedule across the page. This schedule requires five people (unless you want to give up the fifth week off and work a minimum of 400 hours overtime a year. It gives 3 of 5 weekends off. I could send you a copy of my proposal to my employer, which more clearly sets forth the schedule. Trying to cover 24 hours 7 days for 365 days a year with four people only shortchanges everyone and requires a lot of overtime. If you want a hard copy of the schedule and my back-up for why (circadian rhythms) plus at the time the clean air act was a big deal... let me know. Good luck!
