You are correct in your interpretation that one is "forced" to take vacation during that 5th week. However, we have learned to plan our vacations around that week. If one swapped away two days or nights, you could plan a 13 day vacation. We had a coworker whose family lived in Arizona and he worked in New Jersey. By swapping two nights, he finished on Monday morning and returned two weeks later on Monday morning. That 5th week does revitalize. That vacation relief person could be the 5th person in the schedule.

I believe a 4 person rotation incurs overtime just to work the schedule, nevermind covering vacations or illness. And you have to take a gazillion hours of vacation time just to get a week off.

We absolutely love it, compared to 8 hour schedules we previously worked (for years!) and we've been working this for about 8 years. People who were reluctant to try it, have fought to keep it when some management folks tried to take it away.
