Although I'm not too good with numbers...Shiftworker: 84 hrs. in 2 weeks = 2184 hrs. yr.
Nonshiftworker: 80 hrs. 2 weeks = 2080 hrs. yr.
(that's over 100 hours of ??overtime?? - just to start)
Shiftworker: Holidays? Someone has to cover them = overtime
Nonshiftworker: Off for say 80 holidays hours.
Shiftworker: Vacation? Someone has to cover = more overtime
Nonshiftworker: Vacation - aloha!So, whichever way you look at it, the nonshiftworker gets to take off (and rest! or party!) while the shiftworker gets to work even more hours to cover the schedule.
And what if a coworker gets sick? Even more time (granted, probably at overtime!) And if they're out long-term???? You get to work even more!
Even with our 5 person schedule, if someone gets sick we do have to work overtime to cover. But we do get to have a vacation every 5 weeks. And chances are 20% vs. 25% (5 vs.4 people rotating) that coverage would be needed.
