I am assuming that by swing shift you and afternoon-evening schedule. If you mean night shifts try the Canadian Health and Safety (Commission?) or some of the references available on Forum1. The CH&S site is

Over a decade ago I installed day-afternoon schedule augmented by a straight night schedule. It sure beats the round the clock rotation that it replaced. But still it has its drawbacks. The clock change affects some people more than others but the main draw back seems to be social.

It still plays havoc with love life, children rearing, church and school attendence and other activities. Any of those can be depressing. Suprisingly we still have no problem filling the straight night shifts scheduled. I thought we would never have enough night-owls to keep those filled.
