Agree with Lesco when it comes to monotony - need to find a way to break it up with learning, communications, varying tasks, etc. Don't know how active you are, but you may want to work on your circadian rhythm and manage the high/low periods. There are actions you can take to increase alertness on-shift. Also, consider it a good thing that you work fixed nights -- although when you return to weekends, you are changing shifts again to days, in essence. I wouldn't go crazy with caffeine, it can affect your response time, mood, and next sleep period. Bright light has a major impact on alertness, along with food -- types, quantity, hydration, etc. There are lots of good books/articles addressing this. There are many excellent books, articles and speakers on managing fatigue.
