Posted by Mike Jenson on February 02, 2002 at 12:01:30:Hello. I have been working a 12 hour rotating shift (6-6pm)for just over a year now. We do 3 Nt,3 off; 3 days, 4 off; 3 Nt, 3 off; 3 days, 5 off at an industrial plant with the work being physically demanding at different times during the shift. It is unlikely the shift would ever change in the near future because it has been tried unsuccessfully by others I am told. I can't seem to get a routine figured out, and often times wake up being sleepy with a headache after the night shift. For the most part this is the routine, unless we have to change a shift for personal reasons or work an overtime shift. In the worst case that involves going from nights right back into days and trying to sleep the night before your day shift. (which is what I'm doing tonight)
I don't have too much trouble napping at home, but am not one to do that at work with so much going on around us in our break area. Some of the guys can just sleep in the chair like nothing is going on, not me. We used to have a room we used for napping( I rarely used it but was going to start), but they just took that away and the impression we get is the new management will make an example of you if caught sleeping. Their motto is production first, people last. Maybe I can get a Doctors note about the napping thing, just to cover me for a short nap of a half hour at night and maybe reduce the chance of waking up with a headache. When I'm on days I wake up with no problems.
About a routine for day sleeping, is it advisable to get up earlier after a night shift and then nap before I go in at night. Also, after my last night shift, what is the best time to get up?Sorry about the length of this, but I just don't know what to do?
Thank you,Mike
