Someon who gave a talk at a conference had done research in this area, and found that some people are 'rigid' and some are 'flexible' in their ability to adjust to different shifts/ sleep times. It is certainly easier to work shifts if you are a flexible sort. I imagine people fall anywhere along the line from one extreme to the other.
I am fairly rigid by her questionnaire, but have been able to adjust to all 3 shifts. I'm a night owl by nature and day shift was definitely the hardest. Took about 6 months. Then I had to work some eves and gave up on the day shift idea altogether.
This researcher mentioned that she had come across some day people that could not adjust to night shift at all, but most could adjust adequately given time.
Sorry I don't know the researchers name, etc anymore. She presented at a Nursing conference a few years ago.
