I can certainly relate to your situation. I have been in the Corrections field for 25 years and most of that time was working 8 hour rotating shifts with each shift on a 4 on 2 off pattern for 28 days and then change. We rotated Nights Afternoons days. While many people seem to like the 12 hours shifts 4 on 4 off, statistics are available that indicate that too is problematic, usually when you get older. When your circadian clock gets screwed around as it does when shifts rotate, the effect is cumulative and while we seem to think it is a good thing at age 30, by the time we get to 45 or 50 our body is telling us it has had enough. I am still looking for data on the subject as I personally have come to the conclusion that rotating shifts are deadly if you change more frequently than once a year. I recently took early retirement package at age 55 because I realized my health was more important. I haven't worked a shift for 3 1/2 months and I feel much better already althought I am dealing with Sleep Apnea problems. You might also be surprised to learn that I have heard that some studies indicate that rotating shifts contribute to abnormal weight gain.... food for thought. We all need to think about the effect of what we do today on our later years.
