He might just be a grouchy waker. Then again, he might have a rare sleep disorder called REM movement disorder. It causes people to act out their dreams and be violent in their sleep (sometimes even killing people) and wake up remembering nothing. I'd get him checked out by a sleep specialist if I were you.
