Dear pacingabout,

Our plant has work a 12 hour swing that sounds like what you describe. We refer to it as the "Union Carbide Rotation". It works like this:

Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon - Night shift
Tue, Wed, Thur - Off
Fri, Sat, Sun - Day shift
Mon - Off
Tue, Wed, Thur - Night shift
Fri, Sat, Sun - Off
Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur - Day Shift
Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur - Off

Pattern repeats every 28 days.

The main attraction to this shift rotation is the 7 day off period every cycle. In a situation where jobs are not overly physical and jobs are fairly routine, this rotation is very workable.

The downsides to this rotation includes being out of touch coming back from the 7 days off. Any 12 hour shift is challenging if the job tends to be highly physical. Also, should there be a vacancy that must be filled, the pool of personnel that can fill the vacancy may be very small since, on any 12 hour rotation, much of the work force is either just going off duty or coming on duty.

I hope this helps.

Good luck
