I'm interested in this information as well. My husband just recently switched over the third shift about a month ago. We've had problems establishing a sleep cycle for him where he can get fullfilling sleep and not broken up into 2 hour blocks.

My biggest concern is how this is affecting him emotionally and mentally. I've seen an increase in irritability and impatience. I'm trying to be understanding with him because I realize that this is a very hard thing to go through but tonight after a completely irrational disagreement I actually thought about leaving him.

He's making no sense and is blowing things out of proportion. I've bought him ear plugs, used black duct tape on the window, I have a radio in the room so he can put back ground noise on to cover up any other noise. I'm extremely quiet in the house during the day.

I have a 10 year old daughter and it's gotten to the point that we are speaking in hushed whispers all the time. I never dare to watch tv for fear of waking him and the telephone has become the phone from hell. If he hears any conversation going on at all he behaves like the child that doesn't want to miss the party.

I think there should be more research on this from not only the workers view but the family's view as well. This kind of work affects everyone in the household.
