The FDA approved a new treatment for snoring called somnoplasty. It uses a probe with a small needle which is inserted into areas in the back of the mouth and a radio-wave is sent into the area which results in shrinking the tissue. This is done under local anesthetic and is said to be pain free. One result is the lowering or the elimination of snoring which may save some marriages. However, it has not yet been shown to cure apnea which can continue without the noise of snoring (silent apnea). Studies are underway to find out if this process can eliminate some forms of mild sleep apnea with the shrinkage taking place at the site of the obstruction. But the data are not in yet. We should keep our eye out on this one. | |||
