No you do not need to be a RT to quailify for a sleep tech position in most areas, however many sleep labs do advertise for them.
How did you find this website?
How do you know that you want to be a sleep tech?
How did you hear about this profession?
Many times you can get a job in a lab as a trainee and learn on the job. This is refered to as an OJT.( on the job trainee)
After a period of time you become eligable to sit for the boards.( without certificate in polysomnography, or an allied health degree, that would be 18 mos. paid clinical time.
There are some colleges whom offer a certificate in polysomnography, which is basically a sleep techs job, to perform polysomnograms.
Call around to sleep labs in your area and ask for help.
good luck.
