One of the techniques that was recommended to me a few years back when I was looking for an internship in a mental health clinic was just to show up, really. Ask if you can shadow, or show up for a night, and if you're lucky they might hire you. I'm not too familiar with how other labs work or what the standard policies are, but I was trained on the job and did not have to go to school or anything of that sort for being a tech. Though I would assume having a RPSGT or an RRT degree would be beneficial, I don't think it is necessary.

As far as pay, I work in Kentucky and make 12.50 / hour. Personally I think that's a tad low, so you could probably expect to make a bit more (esp. since the cost of living in NJ is higher).

I hope at least some of that is at least somewhat helpful.
