I had a similiar situation with a lab. They recruited me and then it went down hill. I was so relieved when I left, after being recruited again by yet another lab. Sadly I just went from the frying pan to the fire.

Eventually I did find a couple great jobs in a row. However, I would be cautious when you look. I should have seen the warning signs about the second lab but I was so misserable with the one before that I turned a blind eye to the warning signs.

Also, it's really an ego bost when someone comes calling to you. That makes you think they will really value you. However, think about the ethics of someone that sneeks around quietly trying to steel an employee rather than honestly advertize for one?

My advice... Take a deep breath, make up your resume and start looking. Decide now what you want in your next job/employer. What is important to you. Decide what you don't like and don't want to deal with too. That way you will be actively looking for both things in your next interview and be less likely to miss either the good or the bad. If you can, meet the docs and see if you're on the same page with them as to how they view sleep medicine. Is it something that they have a real interest in or is it a way to make quick money?

If you are not set on staying in the midwest you should be able to find a good job without too much delay. If you really wish to stay in that area it may take you a bit longer but you can do it. Take the time it takes to find what you want.

Where I am now I am treated well, with dignity and given respect. However, I now take my time, I didn't take the first job I was offered. I listened to my gut and passed on three that just didn't seem right. A luxury to be able to do that I realize but from what I have heard in the grapevine... I'm glad I did. I paid attention to how the entire organization handles things. I looked at their core values and checked on their reputation. It wasn't just my own personal superior I was interested in, it was the attitude of the entire organization that sold me on this one.
Good Luck!
