reusing nasal masks

Posted by An RPSGT on February 12, 2002 at 21:41:23:

There has been discussion on reusing nasal masks on more than one patient and if it is appropriate or legal, etc. I would appreciate any input as to what your lab is doing-are you sending the masks home with the patient or disinfecting and reusing or sending them out to be sterilized? Are home care companies sending you new nasal interfaces when you send them home with the patients? How is that system working for you? If disinfecting, what chemicals or processes do you use?

I keep getting told that the AASM deducts points if nasal masks are not "Sterilized" instead of just washed and disinfected, and they would prefer nasal interfaces sent home with the patient. Is this what is realistically happening in most accredited labs?

Thanks
