I think you answered part of your question by saying you like the work you're doing. Don't give that up. Yeah, it would be nice to pass the boards, but that's not a requirement to work in this field, and you've got valuable experience. Which is probably one of the reasons why your old employer won't take you back. It'd be cheaper for them to hire a newbie and do OJT. I find it amazing though how some mgrs who didn't a hypopnea from a horse's hind end suddenly look like a genius due to people like you.
Are there any other places within reasonable commuting distance from your fiance?
