Some labs choose to interpret the rule the way your physician does to make scoring easier. The problem is that staging fails to reflec event scoring. What I mean is that a record scored this way can have dozens of scored arousals per hour and normal amounts of stage 1 and 2. The rule should rarely apply because any arousal or movement time can take the patient out of stage 2 and into stage one. Every epoch needs to meet the criteria for staging.
