I realize OSA is more common than many other disorders we can detect with a PSG. However this ratio might be inflated due to the fact that many labs are only looking for OSA. Case in point: My old lab focused on OSA (to a fault as most labs do). I would catch non lethal yet important arrhythmias all the time which the pts and the physicians should be made aware. Our medical director took note of my recurrent documentation of such problems in a misguided way. He came to me an stated, "Wow, you seem to get all the interesting cases!" (We have three other techs.)
I replied in a diplomatic tone, yet as a very much matter of fact informed him, "No, I am just the only one catching them" (Meaning the problems other than OSA.) I was the junior tech. We were all nonregistered. I took the exam as soon as I met the time requirements along with the tech who "trained me". (They had been in sleep for years! I convinced my supervisor/trainer to sit the exam to prove my point.) I passed. They didn't. Our lab manager (who never took the exam stating it was unnecessary) became intimidated because now the least ranking tech had RPSGT credentials. I continued to do my job in the same junior position. Six months later the lab manager left our lab. My "trainer" was promoted. I continued to do my job as usual yet spent my off time looking for a new job. Now I am running three labs making, no joke, twice as much as the job I left.
