check out what a "sleep" pamphlet @ Walmart says

Posted by I am not a sleep expert, but know more than... on August 25, 2002 at 21:35:29:

On the first page it says, "Our great grandparents didn't have sleep problems." (That is misleading - they had Sleep Apnea and Narcolepsy and so on, just as people
today do.)
Page 2 says "Snoring disturbs the bed partner"
(It also can, and often does, disturb the sleep of the person doing the snoring - leading to daytime sleepiness and fatigue, they should have mentioned this...)
Page 2 says Sleep Apneas are "up to two minutes at a time." (I have never, ever seen a Patient stop breathing for 2 minutes. It may occur, but it would be rare. The typical Apnea is 30 seconds or so. The longest Apnea I have personally witnessed is 75 seconds. Why not put the typical rather than the rare.)
Page 2 says "Narcolepsy - also called transient insomnia." (That is absolutely incorrect. Transient Insomnia is when a person has an occasional, short term 'bout of Insomnia, usually caused by stress, illness, etc. Narcolepsy on the other hand, is a Neurological Disorder where a person has, basically, a malfunction in their Hypothalamus, causing them to have "sleep attacks" where they will fall asleep quite suddenly, even while driving, talking, and so on. They may also have other symptoms, such as Cataplexy, a sudden loss of muscle tone, possibly causing them to fall down, or drop the glass they are holding ,etc. usually in response to an emotion, such as anger, laughter, or being "startled." They may also have Hypnogogic Haalucinations, etc. It has nothing to do with Insomnia.)
Page 2 " Restless Legs Syndrome" states "a compelling urge to move your legs, accompanied by periodic rhythmic jerking movements before or during sleep."
(That is incorrect. People with Restless Leg Syndrome may or may NOT have accompanying Periodic Limb movements during sleep, it is not absolute. Also, the periodic limb movements may occur before sleep, but that is not typical. They generally occur during sleep. Just as a person may have RLS but not PLM, they may also have PLM but not RLS.)
Page 3 "offbeat sleep facts" states, "Some people who are able plunge deeply into restorative sleep can get by on four to five hours of sleep per night."
(That is borderline incorrect, if not simply confusing. "plunge deeply"? Yes, there are some people who can function on 4-5 hours per night, but they are the exception, not the rule. Why put this in a brochure? It will encourage those fast-trackers who are living life in the fast lane that they too can "get by" on 4 -5 hours of sleep.)
On the back cover, it states the "sleep expert" is Kate Hamilton. I hope they didn't pay her a lot, because she is not even close to being an "expert." I suspect she copied some stuff out of a book somewhere, and didn't bother to make sure what she was saying was accurate.
