We don't have a clear-cut policy and procedure on dealing with combative/agressive patients. Our emergency policy focuses mostly on medical issues. At the end of our policy we did include this:
Disruptive Behavior: If the patient becomes abusive or combative and the technologist can not handle the situation, the police should be called by dialing "911".
This leaves a lot of discretion up to the technologist. Personally, I've been a night tech for eight years and have never had to send a patient home. I've smelled alcohol on some patients breath before but they've never gotten out of control.
I'd be happy to fax you a copy of our emergency policy if you want to send your fax # to my
e-mail address above.
