I agree wholeheartedly. As much as we might want to tapdance around the issue, compensation is a major consideration regarding where we choose to work. Work environment is probably #1. Not many would choose to stay with an employer where an adversarial relationship exists between you and your supervisors and management adopts a Machiavellian style of rule. That is, let your underlings gut each other and whoever wins, wins.
But in the case of the place I'm at now, our compensation is too low to attract people from outside the hospital. People who grew up in the area considering moving back have stated that they will not take a pay cut to work here. So that leaves us with OJT'ng people from the inside. And when somebody leaves, the process starts all over again.
HR does evaluate each job class using consultant's reports comparing our hospital with those of like size and environment (350 beds-30-50k population).
But there's no way that the powers that be will give us the $$ to recruit from the outside.
There's $$ to be made in this business. Too bad it all goes to docs and med. equipment salesmen.
