Sleep diagnostic systems are typically ‘passive’ recording systems. The products are documented as such with the FDA. If you add an alarm, you must prove that it works in all situations encountered in the lab. If you are looking for alarms, you could use an external oximeter with a pulse or sat alarm. If you want to try something different, you could track down an infant apnea monitor. These monitors have respiratory rate alarms, sat alarms, and heart rate alarms. Check out www.respironics.com or www.casmed.com if you are looking for an apnea monitor.
